This 2019-20 school year, Mae Martin, Student Activities Coordinator, reported that FLVS Student Club members completed 3,439 volunteer hours, surpassing last year’s total and goal. Additionally, FLVS Full Time High School students recorded nearly 31,000 cumulative community service hours that qualify for Bright Future Scholarships when they graduate.

The Benefits of 1:1 Teacher-Student Communication

By on July 20th, 2020

One concern parents express about moving their child from the traditional brick-and-mortar school into online education is a potential lack of student-teacher connection. Some worry the inability to physically approach a teacher’s desk leads to a more impersonal relationship, less help, or limited attention.  I’m here to tell you, it’s quite the opposite!

Meet Emari, FLVS Alum & Dual Enrollment Grad

By on July 16th, 2020

This post was written by Emari Craft, a Class of 2020 graduate who took online courses with FLVS Flex.

My name is Emari Craft. I was a Florida Virtual School (FLVS) student from 7th grade until 11th grade. Online school was the best option for me. I wanted flexibility without compromising my education. When I became a Florida Virtual School student, I was worried that I would not receive the same education as my peers. I did not receive the same education. I believe my education was even better than what I would have received in a traditional school. I was always prepared for End-of-Course exams. I did well on the ACT because of the rigorous courses I took when I was an FLVS student.

Financial Literacy: Taking Charge in Uncertain Times

By on June 26th, 2020

We’ve all heard the statistics. Even before the global COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the economy, a study showed 44 percent of Americans didn’t have enough savings to cover a $400 emergency, and 56 percent had less than $10,000 in retirement savings. More than ever, students need life skills like financial literacy to help them make sound decisions for their future.

Rural America: How Online Learning Can Provide Equitable Opportunities

By on June 24th, 2020

We have all heard of “the” best teacher in the school. In fact, when you are lucky enough to get this teacher for your child (or yourself), you can be left feeling like you won the lottery! Thoughts fill your head thinking about how much your child will learn.

For many, we keep our fingers crossed until we receive our child’s schedule for next year and then breathe a sigh of relief (and maybe do the Happy Dance) when we see Mr. Awesome’s or Mrs. Fabulous’ name. Online learning allows fantastic teachers to be a child’s teacher regardless of the child’s zip code.

In today’s world, how can we ensure that we are providing equitable opportunities to students?

A Year of Resilience at FLVS Full Time

By on May 21st, 2020

As I reflect on the 2019-20 school year, I am reminded of how resilient and steadfast we are. This year’s graduating seniors were born into this world post 9/11, during a time of great uncertainty, and when online education was “just a thing of the future.”

Now they are online graduates during our lifetime’s first major pandemic. It may seem unimaginable, but here we are, persevering!

FLVS Student Becomes a Marvel Hero on Disney+

By on May 20th, 2020

Hailey Scheinman is dedicated to making a difference in her community and around the world because of her twin sister, Livy. Livy was born with epilepsy, causing seizures that required multiple brain surgeries, many medications, and physical therapy from a young age.

At just 6 years old, Hailey was inspired to help her family raise money for the cost of physical therapy by selling homemade paintings and bracelets. Her small project magnified when her family and friends started hosting yearly lemonade stands called “Lemonade for Livy.” Their lemonade stand became a huge success, expanding into a national event that has raised more than $700,000 for the Epilepsy Foundation!
