Global Mindset, Global Win: Model UN Dominates Conferences

FLVSMUN
The Florida Virtual School Model United Nations (MUN) team is in a theoretically outstanding position: the delegates communicate about parliamentary procedure and conference prep online, but met for the first time in person at conferences across Florida in 2014.

The delegates’ adaptability to new situations is tested upon meeting each other, and as friendships form, their diplomacy skills evidently flourish in daylong sessions.

FLVSMUN delegates attended two conferences in fall 2014: the KnightMUN at the University of Central Florida, and the Old City MUN (OCMUNC) in St. Augustine, Fla. Delegates participated in both assembly and crisis committees, and showcased a diverse array of talents at the conferences.

At KnightMUN, FLVS garnered five awards, ranging from the Most Improved to Honorable Mention to Excellent categories. FLVS was also named best small delegation for highest number of awards in relation to the team’s modest size.

A month later, at OCMUNC, FLVS took home four awards, including the prestigious top award of any committee: the gavel.

On the experience, delegate Erica N. said, “MUN conferences are quite simply the best; from [sending off] smoke signals to winning wars with Belgian waffles, you never know what might happen. I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun in one weekend!”

Head delegate of the club Alexa S. noted MUN’s impact on her life. “MUN has been one of the most memorable experiences in my life so far. Not only has it allowed me to grow as a delegate and watch others grow, but it has allowed me to network, build valuable connections with others, and learn how to lead others.”

The FLVS Model United Nations team is on a roll, and there is no stopping them.

Soon they will be packing up for GatorMUN in Gainesville, and later, Florida High School MUN in Maitland.

“MUN is a great way to get yourself off of Netflix and hypothetically create world peace in three days,” says Annie C., a FLVS delegate.
