Spreading Literacy, One View at A Time

The FLVS Literacy Team invites you to join us for more than 30 online events we have planned for Celebrate Literacy Week this year!

Celebrate Literacy Week is an annual event hosted by the Florida Department of Education’s Just Read, Florida initiative. The event is celebrated by school districts across Florida with the intent of building readers. This year’s celebration is scheduled for the week of Jan. 28 – Feb. 1, 2019.

According to Just Read, Florida, “The goal of this year’s Celebrate Literacy Week is to promote literacy and excellent reading habits in the students of Florida.”

What’s Your View?

This year’s theme is Spreading Literacy, One View at a Time. With this as our guide, FLVS is providing a variety of virtual sessions to inspire and encourage FLVS students, families, employees, and others to spread their love of reading and the importance of literacy from their point of view.

Our unique and flexible virtual school setting allows presenters and speakers to offer sessions on topics meeting the interests of a diverse audience. The calendar is bursting with opportunities throughout the week (including evenings) so everyone has the ability to a enjoy sessions that fits their schedule.

Join us for our Kick-Off Speaker

The FLVS Celebrate Literacy Week Kick-Off session is Monday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m.  We are excited to welcome honorary guest speaker Simon T. Bailey. Mr. Bailey is a breakthrough strategist whose life purpose is to teach 1+ billion people to be fearless and create their future by helping them dig deep to release their inner brilliance. He is an FLVS Foundation Board Member and the author of 10 books including “Brilliant Living.”

Participate in the Poetry Slam

Our student Poetry Slam returns this year Friday, Feb. 1 at 4 p.m. This session celebrates the creativity of our student authors and poets. Do you enjoy writing poetry and/or being inspired by the creativity of your peers? Please join the National English Honor Society for this hour-long event to celebrate the art of poetry. To submit a poem, sign up here to participate.

Explore a World of Literacy

One of our sessions is all about connecting literacy and the world of Fortnite!

Other sessions dive into different subject areas, including the arts, foreign languages, math, science, writing, and more. Participants can also engage in book reviews and discussions, or learn about journaling and blogging. Younger audiences are invited to enjoy some fantastic read-aloud books on Friday, Feb. 1.

Parent and teacher professional development sessions are available as well. The line-up certainly has literacy covered from many different viewpoints, including sessions about working with struggling readers and incorporating literacy into the virtual classroom. The “Experience Dyslexia” session will allow participants to view literacy from a dyslexic student’s point-of-view.
