4 Ways to Impact Environmental Conservation

According to the United Nations, damages from climate-related natural disasters cost about $155 billion in 2018 alone. A cost that is too high for Florida Virtual School teachers and students like Delaney, so they are actively working to reduce it by participating in conservation efforts that reduce human impact on the environment.

In honor of the launch of our new high school course, Environmental Science (developed in partnership with the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation), we’re sharing several ways you can aid environmental conservation and make a long-lasting difference in our planet’s ecosystem.

Ready to help build a brighter and more sustainable future? Here are four tips to get you started from Dr. Guy Harvey, Founder of the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and renowned conservationist, and Ms. Katherine Allen, an Environmental Science teacher at FLVS.

1. Turn conservation into recreation.

Real-world activities are a great way to have fun while discovering the world around us and its inhabitants. Try bringing learning to life with activities like beach clean-ups, sorting the recycling at home or in your neighborhood, or conducting a science experiment and recording it to share with family and friends.

Fun activities + conservation = a win for you, the environment, and our friends in the ocean.

2. Explore your local community!

See conservation in action by exploring your community. Take a walk around your neighborhood and observe watersheds from homes, see if there is trash around a pond or lake, or look for the types of algae that show a thriving ecosystem.

With environmental issues impacting our entire ecosystem—in neighborhoods of every size—seeing examples in person can help you identify where you can lend a helping hand.

3. Remember you can learn from anywhere.

Living in Florida with the longest coastline in the contiguous U.S. at 1,350 miles (including 825 miles of beaches), there are a lot of opportunities to experience ocean-related activities firsthand.

If the beach isn’t your scene or you live inland, you can explore the importance of healthy oceans and the preservation of endangered marine species by visiting local zoos or museums, and utilizing online resources.

4. Get inspired by learning from experts.

Dive in and explore the ocean’s biodiversity, learn how you can help marine life, and explore human impact on the Earth’s ecosystems in our new course—Environmental Science, featuring content from the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation.

Almost every page of the course includes hands-on examples, calls-to-action, and enrichment activities that explore case studies of environmental issues and international success stories directly from real environmental leaders.

The course also showcases dozens of STEM careers in the growing fields of environmental and marine science – showing you exactly how you can make a long-lasting difference in our planet’s ecosystem.
