Creative Writing Club Hosts Student Challenge

Are you an aspiring novelist? Do you dream of becoming the next J.K. Rowling or John Grisham? Do you enjoy imaginary world-building and developing relatable characters? If so, crack open that laptop and join the FLVS Creative Writing Club as we participate in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo for short). 

This free worldwide event lasts from November 1 – November 30 and is designed to provide support and encouragement for writers of all ages. Participants in NaNoWriMo challenge themselves to write the first draft of a novel in 30 days. 

From the NaNoWriMo Young Writers Program website: 

National Novel Writing Month is a fun, empowering approach to creative writing. The challenge: draft an entire novel in just one month. For 30 wild, exciting, surprising days, you get to lock away your inner editor, let your imagination take over, and just create!

Writing a novel is no small feat! To accomplish this task, NaNoWriMo participants commit to writing approximately 1670 words per day, for a total of 50,000 words by the end of the month.

This year the FLVS Creative Writing Club has set a club goal to write 1,000,000 words in the month of November, and we invite our greater FLVS community to join us and help us do just that! 

By signing up for the NaNoWriMo challenge, writers become part of a larger writing community all focused on the same goal. They connect online and in-person to support and encourage one another through write-ins, blog posts, chats, and general camaraderie.

There are two ways to participate in NaNoWriMo: 

1. Link up! 

FLVS students under the age of 18 may join our community to accept the NaNoWriMo challenge by visiting ywp.nanowrimo.org and entering classroom code ADMGPFBP.* This website provides information and resources to help you plan your novel, as well as a safe and private place to write, monitored by the FLVS Creative Writing Club sponsor. It automatically counts your words and adds them to the classroom total, but it does not allow others to read your work.

Community members over the age of 18 may visit nanowrimo.org to become part of their local writing community. They will not be permitted to join our classroom, but they may e-mail word count totals each Thursday to flvscwc@gmail.com. 

2. Go it alone.

If you prefer not to sign up on the website, you may write your novel on your own and email your word count totals each Thursday to flvscwc@gmail.com.
