FLVS Offering Free Driver Education Permit Exam

This article was written and published by a Florida Virtual School student for the FLVS student newspaper, News in a Click.

Driver EdFlorida Virtual School students will now be able to take the Florida learner’s license exam for free online after completing the Driver Education/Traffic Safety course!

FLVS has partnered with DriversEd.com to grant students a waiver for one free permit exam, worth $24.95, along with 50 practice exams.

Additionally, the course, which is also free, fulfills the state’s Traffic Laws and Substance Abuse Education four-hour course requirement, awards high school students a half credit elective, provides possibility for insurance discounts, and offers “behind the wheel training” for Orange and Polk county residents.

To qualify, students must be at least 14 and one-half years old to take the course and 15 years old to take the exam, and successfully complete the course by receiving a passing grade.

After passing the online exam, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will be notified. To obtain their permit, the student must then visit their local DHSMV office.

The organization created Gather Go Get which compiles a checklist of the documents students will need to obtain their permit.

My son completed the FLVS drivers Ed course with a final grade of A. He completed the course during the 2017-2018 school year. How does he get to take the free online permit test?

The average pace chart follows a 6-week schedule, but students can complete the work faster or slower following a schedule that works for them!

So 6 weeks. The other online courses which fulfil the same florida learner drivers requirements is only 4-8 hours. 4 hours for the drug portion and a few additional hours for the other. that is what I need to know… HOW MANY HOURS work is the FLVS? Not it will take as long as 6 weeks, if a kid sits in a weekend and does this course, how many hours will it take an A/B student to get thru it.
        Thank you

I finished the class about 6 months ago. I am ready to take my permit test, but when i filled out all my information it said “Florida tests are not available”. I was wondering If that’s because i took so long to take the test

After taking Driver’s Ed with FLVS, you’ll take the Class E Knowledge Exam (available through DriversEd.com or your local DHSMV office) to get your permit. 🙂

I called the FDMV AND THEY said there was a $54 fee for my daughter to get her learners permit even though she took drivers ed on FLVS.

I was wondering, what makes this course 6 weeks long? Im trying to figure out the best place to take the course and test but I don’t think I could do 6 weeks compared to 4 hours.

Can I start this course at any time of the year or does it have to be within the time period of school semesters. For example can I start December and finish January

My daughter already has her permit and was planning to take Drivers Ed at school this fall (she needed permit for in school class) however it is being dropped at her high school next year. Since she already took the DMV test for permit, is there other good information she will learn from this course?

Hi Susan! The course covers the same material from the permit exam, but it’s a great opportunity for review and similar to content she would have had in the school’s class. Hope this helps!

Hi, so I completed the Drivers Ed course. There was an exam as the last assignment. Was this the permit test? I received an A, but I am unsure as to whether or not I go to the DMV now, or if there is another exam I take.

      Hi Isabella,
The last assignment in the class is the course final exam and it is not the Class E Knowledge Exam (permit test). You should receive a message in your FLVS Inbox regarding the next steps and information to earn your license upon completing the course. I hope that this helps!

My child is 14 and a half, she completed the class and is in the process of completing the final 50 question test. If passed and certificate is granted, does this certificate expire? She will be 15 in January 2021.

Hi Ami. The TLSAE (drug and alcohol course waiver) never expires. The free online Class E Knowledge Exam (permit test) also does not expire, however they are only eligible to take the exam online between the ages of 15 and 17. Students get access to the post class licensing website after they complete the FLVS Driver Education course. If a student finishes before they turn 15 the option to take the online Class E Knowledge Exam will populate on that website on the student’s 15th birthday. Prior to their 15th birthday they just see a reminder to come back on their birthday to take the test in the Class E Knowledge Exam spot on the post class licensing website. Once a student turns 18, per Florida law, if they have not already taken the online Class E Knowledge Exam they would need to take it in person at the DMV office. I hope this helps!

I previously took the FL VS drivers ed course a while back and successfully passed the class. However I’ve forgotten much of the content I’ve learned previously. Can I take the course again?

My son took the course through FLVS in 2016, when he was 16 and passed the class with an A and the permit test as well. I took him to get an ID today because he is starting a job and needed a state ID. I asked about whether or not he could get his permit instead of the ID and I was told that they had no record of him completing the course. It is on his HS transcript and I have to paperwork printed from the FLVS site that has a confirmation number and indicates that he has passed it. I did not have the paperwork with me and he needed an ID by tomorrow, so I just told him to get the ID, which cost $33.00. If I go back and present the paperwork as evidence, though some time has passed, is that adequate enough for him to get the permit? It’s stated that it doesn’t expire if I read it correctly. Also, will I have to pay an additional fee for the permit if he’s allowed to get it.

Hi Valerie! You can access your student’s TLSAE (drug and alcohol) course completion receipt, as well as access to the free Class E Knowledge Exam (permit test) at https://sites.google.com/flvs.net/5-02/course-completion-tlsae-class-e-knowledge-test?authuser=0

Please note that the TLSAE and the free online Class E Knowledge Exam do not expire but students are only eligible to take the free online Class E Knowledge Exam between the ages of 15 and 17. After a student turns 18 they would need to take this Exam in person, per Florida law. Hope this helps!

I took the FLVS course and passed, then I took the Class E Exam last year 2019 on Drivers Ed and passed that as well. That was when I was 17 and I’m 18 now. I never actually went to go get my learner’s permit after the test and when I went back on Drivers Ed to see if I can show proof that I took it they said I would have to take the test in person because I’m 18 now even though I already took it when I was 17. I’m planning on getting my license two days from now and I really don’t want to retake the test even though I already took it. What should I do? How do I get proof that I took the exam?

Hey! I completed my drivers Ed through FLVS In 2015-2016 school year. My Transcripts and paperwork never got sent to my local DMV office. Now it’s 2021 and I’ve passed and been trying to pick my learners license and everything up but no longer have contact with my previous instructor or the email associated with my account for school. What can I do?

I got my permit over a year ago and I am taking the driver’s test this month. I completed the course in January 2020 and now in March 2021, the DMV asks for the TLSAE. Would my former FLVS teacher still have access or is there somewhere else I can retrieve it?

My daughter completed the FLVS course and already has a drivers permit, but have not started learning how to drive. She needs an instructor to at least help her start on the road. Does students from FLVS have any free road instruction classes? Thank you. We live in Seminole County.

My daughter needs her TSLAE certificate? where can she get a copy? Is sent directly to the DMV?

    Reply
    1. FLVSFLVS

Hi James! After completing the final exam, students receive an auto-message from the system in their FLVS Message box with the subject line “Driver Ed Next Steps-DMV, license info and more”. That message will give them their username and password as well as the website address to access their individual post-class licensing website, which will have their TLSAE (drug and alcohol) course completion receipt, practice tests as well as access to the free Class E Knowledge Exam (permit test). Hope this helps!

Hi, I took the TSLAE course online in 2021 and was instructed to take the class e knowledge exam next, but I still haven’t taken it even though we’re now in 2022. Can I still take the class e knowledge exam if I still have the password for the exam from last year or can I not take it because I took so long it’s no longer valid?

Good afternoon! I did the Flvs drivers ed course last year and recieved my TLSAE certificate on August 11th, 2021. I recently completed the class e knowledge exam on September 4th, 2022. I really need my permit and want to know if the certificate would still be valid for me to get my permit. If not would I have to buy the drug and alcohol course and do it over?
