Meet Nimue, Spreading Awareness Through Art

Every year, students explore their hobbies and interests through Florida Virtual School (FLVS) courses, clubs, and activities. This year, FLVS Flex student artist Nimue took 5th grade Art to develop her techniques and learn about various art forms and styles, but this was not the start of her journey. Nimue began painting when she was just 4 years old! In fact, many of her family members are artists as well.

When Nimue was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a connective tissue disorder, her family introduced her to painting to help improve her focus and mental health.

Art quickly turned into a passion that Nimue could share with her family, painting with her grandma and learning about art forms like drawing and sculpting from her mother. This is where she says she finds inspiration for her work, creating painting of landscapes, flowers, and birds.

In 2017, she had the opportunity to participate in an art exhibit in Washington DC, featuring artists with rare diseases. Not only did Nimue get to showcase her work at the exhibit, she also “learned about the different reasons why people like their art.”

Now Nimue is painting to raise awareness for EDS, which her brother and mother also have. She explains that “Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome symptoms are different for everyone. My family and I have joint dislocations, joint pain, easy skin tearing, easy bruising, etc. We aren’t sure what is causing what because all three of us have different secondary issues too.”

In the future, Nimue wants to continue advocating for EDS awareness and working on her art. She hopes to spread awareness and encourage others to get involved, adding that people can learn more about EDS through online organizations, social media groups, and charity events.

Nimue shared that FLVS allows her to “go at my own pace, which gives me time for my art. I get to learn more things about myself and what I like to do.” She sent a special shout out to 5th grade teachers, Mrs. Tucciarelli and Mrs. Marvin, for being supportive and kind throughout the year!
