Friendships Formed through FLVS Full Time
By Guest Blogger on April 19th, 2019
This post was written by 2018-19 FLVS Full Time Senior Class President, Carson Brown.
In February of this year, I had the privilege of meeting a friend in person on our schoolwide field trip to SeaWorld. The first interaction I had with my peer was online while participating in 2018 Shark Week – a virtual event hosted by our student council that consisted of five days devoted to networking for FLVS students. I watched the live chat as students showcased their Halloween costumes on “Wacky Wear Wednesday.” One particular comment that caught my eye was an unassuming, clear statement. I’ll never forget the words he wrote.
“This is so cool!” the comment began. “I have found my people.” Continue reading
A Seatbelt Can Save
By Guest Blogger on April 12th, 2019
One of the many things I love about Tallahassee is the trees. Beautiful, shade-providing, mature live oaks. It’s the tree-lined entrance of my subdivision that captivated me at first site and drew me to live here. It’s so un-Florida like—feels more like North Carolina and my northeastern upbringing.
Earlier, as I left my home and got in my car to go meet a friend for a meal, I decided to make a quick phone call. Bluetooth can be a beautiful thing. The person who I had just called answered when I heard what sounded like a smash ahead of me. Continue reading
Keeping the Student at the Center
By Florida Virtual School on April 10th, 2019
The 2017-18 school year marked the 20th anniversary of Florida Virtual School (FLVS). The 20-year anniversary of FLVS was not only a historic occasion for the first statewide Internet-based school in the United States, but also a significant and positive milestone for virtual education.
When founded in 1997, FLVS consisted of six teachers, four support staff, 77 enrollments, and six courses. The use of online education tools was still new for the high schoolers of 1997. Continue reading
My Middle School Experience at FLVS
By Guest Blogger on April 8th, 2019
This post was written by Hindy, a middle school student at FLVS.
My name is Hindy and I am in 8th grade. I have been in traditional private schools my entire life, so when my parents told me I would be switching to FLVS Flex for my math and science classes, it was a little scary! No one else in my school had ever done FLVS, so of course, I was a little nervous about it.
I enrolled in November, so I knew I was behind, but not what to expect. I didn’t realize that FLVS is almost exactly like a real school. We have real projects, real classmates, and real teachers, as well as clubs and a yearbook! Continue reading
FLVS Full Time Grad Makes Noise in Music Industry
By Guest Blogger on April 4th, 2019
This is an excerpt from an article published by the Windermere Observer featuring Noah Schnacky, a graduate of Florida Virtual School Full Time.
The moment he hit the stage at Country Thunder — to the tune of hundreds of cheers — Noah Schnacky’s signature smile lit up his face. It was the first time the Windermere-area native had been invited to play the main stage at the annual country-music festival in Kissimmee, and he was both thrilled and right at home on stage.
FLVS Math Club Celebrates Pi Day
By Guest Blogger on March 22nd, 2019
Our love for “Pi” at FLVS was evident when 92 students came together to celebrate this simple two-letter word on March 14, 2019. “Pi” is the term coined by William Jones in 1706 representing the ratio for the circumference to the diameter. The decimal equivalent for pi begins with 3.14 and it has become a tradition of Math lovers to celebrate “Pi Day” on 3/14 each year.
This year, the FLVS Math Club created a Virtual Escape Room to test participants knowledge in the use of pi. Continue reading

Taking Programming Skills to the Next Level
By Guest Blogger on March 11th, 2019
Interested in learning advanced Python concepts? Searching for a high school course that is challenging, yet fun and engaging? For those who have taken Foundations of Programming (FOP), Procedural Programming is a new course at FLVS that allows students to tackle advanced concepts in computer science.
Procedural Programming has six modules that build upon the concepts taught in FOP while allowing students to design programs based on their own interests. The concepts use real-world examples students relate to. Continue reading
Top 5 Myths About Online Learning
By Anne Flenner on February 28th, 2019
As a child, did you ever play the game telephone? It starts when one person whispers something into another person’s ear and then the message is passed down from person to person. At the end, the message is completely different from what was first whispered. We see this a lot in real life. Unless a person experiences something for themselves, they really don’t know what their message will be!
Online learning has been around for more than 20 years now, but there are still some messages that have been passed down throughout the years that aren’t exactly the “real” message.
Following Science in Space: NASA’s Asteroid Mission

Two and a half years ago on September 8, 2016, I was able to witness the launch of OSIRIS-REx to share with our school community.
I’m sure you’re wondering what that means, right? OSIRIS-REx is a NASA asteroid study and sample return mission. OSIRIS-REx stands for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security Regolith Explorer. Its main goal is to obtain a sample of at least 60 grams of rock from an asteroid called Bennu, a near-earth asteroid with lots of carbon in it. Now if you’re wondering exactly how much 60 grams is, one candy Skittles is approximately 1 gram. Imagine 60 of those and that’s how much of Bennu we will be bringing back to the Earth. And wait for it…it will take seven years before the mission is completed!
During our live lessons for Earth Space Science, we’ve been discussing current science events and all things space – including updates from Bennu. Continue reading
