Providing Deeper Meaning: Two Brothers Take Hebrew 1 and 2

Jonathan and David Miller first started taking courses with Florida Virtual School (FLVS) in middle school because they were always traveling for their parent’s work as missionaries. Jonathan, now in twelfth grade, and David, now in ninth grade, are homeschooled and use FLVS courses because they provide them with the flexible schedule they need, paired with the comprehensive courses they are interested in taking. 

In fact, the brothers were both interested in taking new FLVS World Language courses – Hebrew 1 and 2 – and they decided to enroll in the classes together. Their main reasons: they wanted to be able to speak the language when they travel to Israel one day, as well as connect to their faith on a deeper level.

Four Years of Foreign Language: Worth it?

Foreign language courses are required subjects that students must take two years of during their four years of high school. Depending on which courses are offered by the school, students may be able to take two years of Spanish, French, Mandarin, or any other available choice. While two years are the minimum requirement, there are additional courses that offer more in-depth practice and understanding of the language, such as Spanish 3 or Spanish 4.

Foreign Language Benefits for Young Learners

Hola! Bienvenidos! As I reflect on my personal journey learning Spanish, the language was easy to love, but not easy to learn. During the five years of Spanish courses that I completed in high school and college, I learned just enough to (slowly) communicate with Spanish-speaking acquaintances.

This is something that I have continued to refine over the years, and most recently, I have been facilitating my own child’s learning of a second language.

Used by parents, professionals, athletes, public speakers, and others in various industries, American Sign Language (ASL) is one of the most popular language classes in colleges and universities.  Learning ASL offers several benefits and marketable skills – from making you a better communicator to improving abstract thinking and hand/eye coordination.

Hello! Learning a Language is Good for You!

Hola! Bonjour! Nín hǎo! Salve! Merhaba!

No matter how you say it, learning a foreign language is beneficial to you in many ways.

When I was in high school (many years ago), I viewed taking two years of foreign language as simply a duty to fulfill my graduation course requirements; that unless I was fluent, a different language wouldn’t benefit me in life. (I also felt this way about math courses such as Geometry; sorry math teachers and lovers.) I would sure love to go back and redo it again now (language, not math).

In no particular order, here are a few reasons why I’ve learned that learning a foreign language is important. Continue reading
