Top 3 Reasons to Join a Club This Year

Want to make new friends and connect with other students? Have interests or hobbies you would like to explore? Joining a club (or several) is the perfect way to engage beyond the physical or virtual classroom! FLVS offers dozens of clubs for students of all grade levels! Learn more at our Virtual Club Rush open house event on Thursday, Aug. 30 from 4-7 p.m.

Studies have shown that joining a student club is beneficial both personally and professionally, and here are our top three reasons why.

Meet People & Make Friends

Joining a club gives you the opportunity to interact with buddies you may already have while also meeting new people who have similar interests. Not only will you be involved in something you enjoy, you’re potentially expanding your friend list. For older students, this can also be a great source of networking and building up a referral base for employment and college references.

Learn Leadership & Life Skills

Yes, you are absolutely learning during the classes you take, but joining a club continues the learning process outside of the online classroom. When you join a club in an area that you’re interested in, you’ll have the opportunity to discuss the topic with others who are just as passionate about it as you. Most clubs also host guest speakers, panels, and other events that will allow you to gain even more knowledge in the subject.

Depending on your grade level, many clubs are designed to let students be in charge. This means you have a voice and can work with your club sponsor on many aspects of how the club operates. Through meetings and activities, you are learning valuable leadership skills that you will need throughout life, no matter where life leads you.

In addition to leadership, by joining a club you practice “real-world” skills such as:

  • Time management
  • Teamwork
  • Goal setting
  • Problem solving
  • Analytical thinking
  • Public speaking

Resume Building

If your child is an elementary student, we know resume building isn’t even on the radar yet, but for our high schoolers, this is important. Whether you are college bound, plan to join the armed forces, or will enter the workforce after 12th grade, listing extracurricular activities and skills that you’ve gained looks very good on your resume. Participating in a club, especially one that aligns with your career path can give you that extra something that reinforces your passion.

And it goes without saying there’s a fourth benefit to joining a club this year—you will have fun!

I would like to have my second grader Trevar join the robotic club but don’t know how to register. Your assistance will be highly appreciated!

Does anyone have local social hour for 7th grade girls? We live in Melbourne,fl. We would love to go do fun activities a couple times a week with some local virtual school friends. Is there an option for this?

Hi there! For courses, our students study online using different systems for curriculum and live lessons. Clubs typically meet using the same online live lesson software, but may arrange in-person events and activities. Visit for more info!

We are also interested but for high schoolers in the Tampa area. We don’t have a Facebook account. Is there another way of joining the group?
