Student Focus: Meet Peyton
By Guest Blogger on October 16th, 2019
This post was written by Meghan Leffew, one of our FLVS Full Time Elementary parents.
As a mother, I am incredibly thankful for FLVS Full Time. My son is five and this is his first year of school. He was recently diagnosed with a rare genetic mutation that causes things like neutropenia and leukemia. I only had two choices for his education – to hold Peyton out of Kindergarten or take a chance.
We decided to enroll Peyton into FLVS Full Time three weeks before school started. Continue reading
Celebrating the Teachers of Today…and Tomorrow
By Guest Blogger on October 4th, 2019
Every year, World Teachers’ Day provides an opportunity to address issues related to educational instruction and our dedicated teachers who are educating the next generation. The 2019 theme of World Teachers’ Day is “Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession.” According to UNESCO, “The day provides the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, to take stock of achievements, and to address some of the issues central for attracting and keeping the brightest minds and young talents in the profession.”
I started my full-time career in secondary education in the Fall of 2003. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting thousands of students. Continue reading

Blazing the Trail with the Class of 2019
By Guest Blogger on June 14th, 2019
This post was written by 2018-19 FLVS Full Time National Honor Society President, Julia Dawson.
As a graduate of FLVS Full Time, I’m so thankful for my parent’s willingness to live unconventional lives.
Halfway through my sophomore year, my family made a life-changing decision. We decided to leave our comfortable, subdivision existence behind and set out on an adventure to travel the country in an RV. The prospect both excited and terrified me. On one hand, it meant leaving behind my friends, school, church, and the perfect, tied-with-a-bow plan I had made for my life. On the other hand, it meant embracing the unknown and forging out into a territory few have been courageous enough to explore. I had no idea that it would not only be the single most amazing experience of my life, but that it would also lead me to a school that I am immensely proud to have attended. Continue reading
Saturday Science: Creating Lava Lamps
By Guest Blogger on June 7th, 2019
Find Saturday Science instructions for creating your own lava lamp below!
Saturday Science is a monthly enrichment opportunity for FLVS elementary students and their families.
During these online sessions, we do an experiment together that helps us “see” and better understand various scientific concepts. Experiments are chosen to include materials commonly found at home or the local dollar store. A big emphasis is also placed on selecting experiments that require materials that might otherwise be thrown out after use, such as plastic water bottles, plastic bags, paper towel cardboard rolls, boxes, etc. Elementary students can perform the experiment live during time together or simply watch if they do not have the materials. All sessions are recorded so that if a student misses the “live” event or later acquires the materials, it can be viewed at any time.
As a teacher, it is my hope that Super Saturday Science helps create and/or deepen a love for science and hopefully plants a seed of interest that encourages our elementary students to pursue a career in science! Continue reading

6 Interesting Facts About Teaching at FLVS
By Guest Blogger on May 15th, 2019
At Florida Virtual School, we value our diverse and dedicated team of instructors who are the foundation of our students’ success.
Teachers new to online learning often have questions about the technology or how they communicate with students. At FLVS, our award-winning student information system, Virtual School Administrator (VSA), allows us to manage, track, and engage our students. Our learning management system allows students to access the curriculum, coursework, and teacher feedback. While these tools facilitate quality instruction, the relationships teachers build with students remain central to the online teaching experience.

Connecting through Creative Writing Club
By Guest Blogger on May 13th, 2019
This post was written by Lia, a student in the FLVS Creative Writing Club.
The Creative Writing Club is a place where students of Florida Virtual School (FLVS) can come together and appreciate the joys of writing. Being in virtual school, it can be hard to connect with other students, let alone find anyone who is interested in the same things as yourself.
This is where clubs have a huge role. They allow for students to connect in ways that would have been impossible on their own. The Creative Writing Club is only one of the FLVS clubs that do this. With more than 300 students, the Creative Writing Club is a popular choice for many students looking for a club. Continue reading

How many kids dream of becoming an astronaut as a child?
At this year’s FLVS Flex Elementary Career Day, NASA Astronaut Dr. Anna Fisher shared a story that was out-of-this-world and inspired kids to never give up on their dreams. Dr. Fisher served as a Mission Specialist on the STS-51A Discovery in 1984. She was just one of our special guests who recently came to visit the virtual classrooms of our elementary students.
Here are just a few of the lessons our students learned at Career Day! Continue reading
