Myths about Homeschooling with FLVS Flex

Choosing to homeschool your student with FLVS Flex is a big decision. However, knowing the facts can put a family’s mind at ease as they choose a learning environment that is best for their student.

Below are three common myths about home education with FLVS Flex.

Myth 1: Since they don’t get a diploma, homeschoolers can’t go on to college.

When home education students graduate from high school, it is true that they do not earn a traditional public high school diploma and there is no graduation ceremony. However, that does NOT make their graduation less meaningful! Home Education students can graduate with a homeschool affidavit that is signed in front of a notary by their parent per the Florida State Statues of Home Education. Homeschool families may also elect to create their own keepsake certificate or register with an umbrella school that issues diplomas as an independent, overseeing educational institution.

It is possible for home education students to go on to college if they meet the college/university requirements for admission. Almost all colleges/universities will accept the student’s official transcript, tests scores (SAT/ACT/PERT) and homeschool affidavit for admission. (Since FLVS Flex is an accredited Florida public school curriculum provider, the school can provide official transcripts; however, Flex transcripts will only show courses completed in the Flex program).  FLVS Flex boasts homeschool students who have been accepted to Stanford, Purdue, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, University of Georgia, Oklahoma, University of Florida, Florida State University, and so many more! Families are encouraged to check out the admissions websites of the colleges/universities they are interested in to learn more about how home education students are admitted!

Myth 2: Universities don’t want homeschoolers who take online courses.

To the contrary, learning online is a skill. As our education system moves more and more towards online learning, universities want students to know how to be motivated, independent, and organized leaners. Universities across the nation have even encouraged students who need to meet NCAA eligibility to take FLVS Flex core courses as they are widely respected by university admission and NCAA.

Myth 3: Homeschoolers aren’t as well rounded as others.

Having flexibility in online learning affords students to plan their days using all available hours! Many of our FLVS Flex students enjoy volunteering, participating in internships, training for their sport, running their own business, and more, during times when the traditional school day may be happening. In 2014, FLVS surveyed more than 900 of its home education students and 61 percent noted moving to home education/FLVS Flex for flexibility in their education. With this flexibility, students can make themselves even more competitive to colleges/universities by focusing their time on a passion that sets them apart!

If you choose to homeschool your student with FLVS Flex, you can feel confident that your student is receiving a quality, innovative, and accredited education that will make him/her competitive in all future endeavors! Thank you, Anne, for addressing these three big misconceptions about homeschooling. As a former homeschool mom/teacher (just finished my 17th year last summer), I wanted to add that many area support groups have graduation ceremonies that homeschoolers can participate in. FPEA also has a large graduation ceremony each year during their convention in May. My daughter participated in the Tampa Bay Homeschoolers’ Graduation ceremony and my son opted not to participate in one, so we did a small family ceremony at home. That’s another great thing about homeschooling, students can graduate, or move on, in a way that works best for them.

Hello, I’m a senior and not too sure I want to go to college or if I do not right out of high school. My question is is the certificate given to a student who has completed their high school credits through flvs equivalent to the traditional high school diploma in terms of employers. Also if anyone knows the specific reason why you can not graduate from flvs flex I would really like to know.

Great question, Alyssa! Home school students graduate just as any other student would when they complete their high school credits! They just graduate differently with a home school affidavit. When you think of a diploma, it has a student’s name, a graduate date and a school on it. When Home Education students graduate, they have a home school affidavit with their name, a date and that they were Home Schooled on it. Most employers do accept the home school affidavit. In my 8 years as an FLVS school counselor, I have only had one student come back to me and state that an employer would not accept the home school affidavit. Since they wanted the job very much, the student choose to take the GED to earn a high school diploma after they had completed the coursework needed to gradaute. By taking the GED test, they earned a State of Florida diploma and began working at the job of their dreams! 🙂 Students wanting to earn a traditional public school diploma must CHOOSE ONE of the below to finish senior year with:

1-Enroll back into a local public school or FLVS Full Time for senior year

2-Enroll with a local Adult Education program

2-Enroll with FATDEC (Online Adult Education Program) Senior year: http://www.fatdec.com
This is an online program that allows adult students (age 18 and above) to earn their needed high school credits on line. Many Florida school districts use them.

      3-Take the GED Exam
To complete high school, students may opt to take the GED Exam.

I hope this information is helpful!

Hi Alyssa! I hope all is well! Great question! When homeschool students graduate, they have a home school affidavit signed in front of a notary by their parent/guardian stating that they have graduated. When students apply to a job, they will provide this to the employer! Just as a traditional diploma has a student’s name, a graduate date and a school on it, so does the home school affidavit. It is just a different way of graduating!

In my 8 years working with Home Education students, only 1 time did a student come back to me and state that an employer would not accept the home school affidavit. The student really wanted the position so she choose to take the GED to earn a State of Florida diploma so that she could start the job of her dreams!

Students wishing to earn a traditional high school diploma must choose ONE of the below to finish senior year with:

HI Vivian! I hope all is well! Every county in Florida is actually a bit different in regards to this! Some counties will allow you to come back in 2nd semester, others would like for the student to return at the beginning of the 12th grade year! The best thing to do is to contact the local school where you think your student may go back to and ask them directly! Hope this helps! Thanks!

So If I am in FLVS Flex I will still be able to graduate, I just don’t get a normal diploma Like I would in Full time and wouldn’t have a ceremony?

In addition, Will I receive any type of paper saying I finished HS?
    ~Thanks

Hi MaKayla! That’s correct. FLVS Flex doesn’t currently provide any type of formal document upon completing your high school requirements, but students can use the homeschool affidavit for their personal records to show they finished high school or print their own keepsake homeschool certificate.

My students did flex for the second half of 8th grade and all of 9th then decided to go back to brick and mortar and now are concerned about the standardized testing they didn’t do. Will they be able to continue brick and mortar for junior and senior year and graduate without those tests? I’ve asked many people and can’t get a straight answer.

    1. FLVSFLVS

Hi Tabatha. They may be required to take End-of-Course exams for certain subjects, depending on the courses they took in 9th grade. The counselor at your physical public school should be able to help answer this question for you!

        HI Robin,
I hope all is well! I’m sorry we missed this comment! Yes, homeschool students are welcome to take state standardized tests if they’d like to! If a student plans on returning to public school in middle school, you would want them to take the Civics EOC as that is a public school requirement for promotion. However, if they don’t go back until 9th grade, they wouldn’t make them go back and take it as they would have already completed middle school. Homeschool students who plan on going back to public school in high school are advised to take the Algebra I EOC and 10th grade Reading and Writing FSA as these are required to be taken an passed to earn a Florida public school diploma. I always think it’s best for them to take these while it’s fresh in their minds, then years later! Hope this helps! Anne

So my son is currently in FLVS Flex but plans to start dual enrollment next semester. He is a junior this year. My question is can he go back to his original high school while still doing dual enrollment for his senior year? And does he have to go back for the full year even though he’ll only need one class to complete his high school credits? He really wants to obtain his High School Diploma from his High school and attend graduation with his friends.

Thank you Anne! This whole thread of questions and comments is very helpful!

I’m wondering…when Homeschool FLVS students take a class that would require an EOC for graduation in traditional public school (Civics, Algebra 1, Geometry, etc)…can they go to a local brick and mortar school and take the exam after finishing the Homeschool FLVS online course? My daughter will take Civics and Algebra 1 next year (7th grade), but the plan is to enroll her back into traditional public high school when the time comes. If she graduates from that high school, will they require her to go back and take the Civics and Algebra 1 EOCs in order to get a diploma? She will take those classes in 7th grade. :-/ Thanks so much!!

    Hello Anne,
I am trying to clarify information before we begin homeschooling and enrollment in FLVS Flex for our son. He will be a Senior but is having late summer surgery and will have a lengthy recovery & rehab schedule with travel to out-of-state rehab facilities.
He is an advanced student (4.2) Honors/AP Student and we are concerned about the negative impact to his Academics. The plan is to allow him the time and flexibility to recover and rehab properly while still allowing him to participate in his education when he is at that point and ready. Based on the schedule we believe that this will push his graduation date into 2021. Does the FLVS Flex Homeschooling option allow us to do this? Thank You for response in advance.

      Hi David,
Thanks for your message! I wish your son all the best and for a quick recovery! Yes, as long as your student is registered as a homeschool student in the county in which you live, we can serve him in new courses up until age 20 (finish by 21) if he is a regular ed student. So, if he needs additional time, as long as he remains in good standing with Home Ed, we can continue to work with him until he completes his required courses for graduation and his future plans! As a homeschool parent, you would be the one to graduate him, so there is not a specific date in which this needs to happen. I hope this helps!
      Thanks!

What exactly is the difference between flex and full time? The only difference i keep reading about is that flex can start at anytime of the year while full time sticks to a public school calendar.
From reading previous comments it sounds like full time is considered an online school and flex is considered homeschool.
Can anyone go anymore indepth with the difference between the two options?

She thinks that living with us might help her get more motivated since we have a stay-at-home parent who would be more involved. If she moved to our home in Florida are there options to enroll her in physical high school (Hillsborough county), FLVS full-time, or FLVS flex?

Hi! I hope all is well! FLVS is a public school curriculum that serves students in the state of Florida. If you have guardianship over your niece (and live in Florida) it is possible that we could serve her. If her parents who live outside of Florida maintain custody, she could look into take courses with our Global School (fee based program). As she is a senior, the best thing to do is to contact one of our school counselors to help talk through all her options! Will I have to pay for them? Second; I am currently a Sophomore, and due to the COVID-19 shut downs, I did not take the Grade 10 ELA assesment required for graduation, so how would that work? Do I have to take the test in the 2020-21 school year? Third; Just to clarify, will every course I take that needs a end-of-the-year exam will count towards my transcript and graduation requirements? Thank you.

HI Ana! I hope all is well! Great questions! When you choose to take AP courses with FLVS Flex, you are encouraged to take the AP Exams that happen in May. Your AP course teacher will help you with the registration information to get set to take the exam in May (generally at the local high school.) AP exams are free when you take them with FLVS Flex. While COVID has canceled tests for this spring, we do expect testing like the FSA/EOC’s to be back as early as the fall. If you become a Home Ed student and want/need to take the EOC’s, you will contact your local home ed office and they will help you get scheduled at the next available test date. Not every subject has an EOC. The only subjects in Florida that have EOC tests are Algebra I, Geometry, Biology and US History. Public school students are required to take these exams to graduate. Home Ed students are not required to take these exams, but every student is different so please reach out to your FLVS Flex School Counselor if you have specific questions about your goals and plans! Thanks!

She has already taken Algebra 1 in 8th, but still needs to take the EOC for that, where and how do we schedule that? He has a mix of credits from flvs flex and homeschool. Is there somewhere I can see an example of what detailed is desired in the portfolio? I’d like to get that together asap. I’d like to enroll him 8/2023. Thanks!

So Florida Bright Future says a diploma is required from a Florida school. How do home school students earn the bright futures scholarship?

My son started FLVS Flex this school year. He’s turning 12th grade next year. Question: Can he switch flex to full time on the 3rd or 4th semester for his diploma and graduation?

Yes, students can switch from FLVS Flex to FLVS Full Time in the spring semester. Be sure to check with your school counselor to make sure he’s on track with graduation requirements.

We are homeschooling my 4th grader but want to go to in person school for 6th grade. If we start FLVS will that allow for an easy transfer to in person when it’s time?

Hi there, our Full Time Public Schools follow a traditional school calendar whereas students can take courses year-round with FLVS Flex. Both programs offer teacher support and live lessons. Don’t hesitate to reach out to an FLVS Counselor to discuss which option is right for your student.

Hi, thank you so much for your very helpful information! My daughter is currently 11th grade at private school in person, however due to her illness, she is no longer able to attend school in person. We are now switching her to FLVS to complete her Junior year. If she is ready to go back to school in person for her senior year, would being in FLEX OR FULL time FLVS matter as for her academic credit wise? Will credits that she will be taking as FLEX be accepted at her next school she will be attending for senior year? She may not going back to the school she was attending. I know she wants to go to college and just wants the best option for her future. Thank you for your time.

Hello, I am currently a Junior doing FLVS FLEX and I have been so nervous about not getting a diploma, does it matter, and where would i get my transcripts from? Will not getting a diploma ruin my chances of getting a doctoral?
