FLVS Students and Staff Give Back
By Guest Blogger on February 17th, 2017
Random acts of kindness are enough to make anyone’s day.
Whether it is holding a door open, paying it forward in line at Starbucks, or helping someone carry in groceries, we all have the capacity to be kind on a daily basis. This year, in order to celebrate National Random Acts of Kindness Day (February 17), we spoke with some awesome FLVS students that really know what it means to be caring and kind.
The Creative Writing club is participating in an ongoing service project that started in February and runs through March. There are many ways that students of the club can help out. They can donate books, read to someone, help out at the library, or even volunteer as a reading, writing, or English tutor. So far, the Creating Writing Club members have donated 25 books.
The STEM/Science Club at FLVS recently participated in a clothing drive. Sometimes it can be easy to take something as simple as the clothes on our back for granted. Continue reading

First, we want to remind you that Presidents’ Day is just around the corner. Please note that Monday, Feb. 20 and is a designated holiday break for all FLVS instructors and support staff.
After the long weekend, there are all kinds of opportunities that extend beyond the classroom or courses you select. Here are a few that FLVS is proud to sponsor:
Digital Learning Day
Celebrate Digital Learning Day (DLD) with FLVS next Thursday, Feb. 23. Digital learning can involve any instructional practice that uses technology to strengthen a student’s learning experience. With digital advances ranging from educational apps to new online courses and programs, DLD is a day to keep up with the latest in online education. Be sure to check out our social media pages on this special day next week as we feature a DLD Elementary Takeover on the FLVS Instagram page. FLVS Yearbook Club: Unbound
By Guest Blogger on August 22nd, 2016
Nearly five years ago, the first edition of the Florida Virtual School yearbook, Unbound, was published.
Many things have changed since then, but one thing has not – this is a yearbook created by and for “unbound” students. At FLVS, students are not bound to four walls of a classroom, nor are they bound to lectures that feel endless. Unbound was created to show off these exemplary students and our exemplary school.
My name is Scott Schneider and I am the Editor-in-Chief of this year’s Unbound yearbook. I am a Junior at FLVS Full Time, and I can testify to the unbound feeling that FLVS provides. Our goal is to provide that same feeling to students in the yearbook. We have created many ways to get involved this year without being bound to deadlines, countless hours of work, etc.
One of the ways to get involved is through the Summer Cover Challenge! Continue reading
Get to Know the FLVS Creative Writing Club
By Guest Blogger on February 10th, 2016
Humans are storytellers.
There is a story held close in everyone’s mind, an unforgotten little voice stashed to the back during busy work days and released into all areas of the brain come nightfall when it is time to dream.
Anyone can be a writer – we are all writers – but some people want to expand this talent into a hobby, a career…or perhaps writing stories is like their oxygen. Without gripping novels, somber poems, or thunderous orations, our world would be bland and jejune.
If you have ever pondered an idea, a spark, a dream of a story in your mind that’s begging to break out and be heard, or if you are interested in seeing a hidden talent flourish, then the FLVS Creative Writing Club is for you! Continue reading
28 Things That Matter More Than Getting “Likes”
By Guest Blogger on December 14th, 2015
This article was written and published by a Florida Virtual School student for the FLVS student newspaper, News in a Click.
With all of the social media available to the world today, people tend to forget about the bigger things in life.
Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Reddit, Instagram, Snapchat and many other social media sites all play an important part in our everyday lives. Sometimes, it is easy to forget that there is more to life than documenting everything and getting likes on pictures and posts.
The average person, age 18-64, spends three hours on social media daily. 16 billion people share photos every day.
It is indeed fun to spend time on social media and everybody deserves time to look at these sites, but, with the amount of time we spend on social media, it would seem that we are missing out on life. Continue reading
Writing Clicks as a Means to Express Oneself
By Guest Blogger on October 22nd, 2015
I’m happy when I’m writing or thinking of ideas about what to write. I’ve been that way for as long as I can remember. How lucky I was to find this out about myself while still in school!
You see, after reading a poem I wrote, my second grade teacher, Mrs. Kast, said to me “Suzan, you’re a writer.”
I still remember those words of encouragement, although that is now thirty-something years ago. That praise not only boosted my spirit, it stuck with me my whole life. I began to create, theme, and express myself in many different styles of writing. My friends knew I would always carry paper and pen wherever I went, because you never know when creativity will strike! Continue reading

Global Mindset, Global Win: Model UN Dominates Conferences
By Guest Blogger on January 16th, 2015
The Florida Virtual School Model United Nations (MUN) team is in a theoretically outstanding position: the delegates communicate about parliamentary procedure and conference prep online, but met for the first time in person at conferences across Florida in 2014.
The delegates’ adaptability to new situations is tested upon meeting each other, and as friendships form, their diplomacy skills evidently flourish in daylong sessions.
FLVSMUN delegates attended two conferences in fall 2014: the KnightMUN at the University of Central Florida, and the Old City MUN (OCMUNC) in St. Augustine, Fla. Delegates participated in both assembly and crisis committees, and showcased a diverse array of talents at the conferences. Continue reading
