FLVS Collaborates with Research Partners

Blended and online learning are still relatively new modes of Kindergarten-12th grade learning. As they continue to grow, learning more about what makes them effective for students is critically important. 

Research and Evaluation is an arm of our Analysis, Assessment, and Accountability department at Florida Virtual School. Part of this team’s work includes collaborating with universities and other research partners to broaden and contribute to blended and online learning research focused on primary and secondary educational environments.

The Importance of Online School Attendance

While a scientific study has not been conducted of how many FLVS Flex students “come to school” in their pajamas, we do know that it is one of the perks of online learning!

Comfy clothes are a benefit, but sometimes it is difficult for students to approach online learning with the same structure as they would a traditional school. While students don’t have to get up at a specific time and get dressed each day, attendance is still important. Continue reading



My Middle School Experience at FLVS

My name is Hindy and I am in 8th grade. I have been in traditional private schools my entire life, so when my parents told me I would be switching to FLVS Flex for my math and science classes, it was a little scary! No one else in my school had ever done FLVS, so of course, I was a little nervous about it.

I enrolled in November, so I knew I was behind, but not what to expect. I didn’t realize that FLVS is almost exactly like a real school. We have real projects, real classmates, and real teachers, as well as clubs and a yearbook! Continue reading

Top 5 Myths About Online Learning

As a child, did you ever play the game telephone? It starts when one person whispers something into another person’s ear and then the message is passed down from person to person. At the end, the message is completely different from what was first whispered. We see this a lot in real life. Unless a person experiences something for themselves, they really don’t know what their message will be!

Online learning has been around for more than 20 years now, but there are still some messages that have been passed down throughout the years that aren’t exactly the “real” message.

Online Learning: A 20 Year Journey

If you asked me 20 years ago where I saw myself in the future, I’m not sure I would have said I’d be at Florida Virtual School (FLVS) as a Communications Specialist. My love of writing came while in second grade when my teacher, Mrs. Kast, told me I was a natural writer, so the communications part fits. But 20 years ago, I did not have a clue what a virtual school was.
