This article was written and published by a Florida Virtual School student for the FLVS student newspaper, News in a Click.

Things that matter more than getting likesWith all of the social media available to the world today, people tend to forget about the bigger things in life.

Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Reddit, Instagram, Snapchat and many other social media sites all play an important part in our everyday lives. Sometimes, it is easy to forget that there is more to life than documenting everything and getting likes on pictures and posts.

The average person, age 18-64, spends three hours on social media daily. 16 billion people share photos every day.

It is indeed fun to spend time on social media and everybody deserves time to look at these sites, but, with the amount of time we spend on social media, it would seem that we are missing out on life. Continue reading

Congrats to our 2015 Photo Contest Winners

By on September 26th, 2015

2015 FLVS Contest winnersThis year, we saw all kinds of inspiring and amazing student stories in our fall photo contest.

Over the last two months, students have been sharing images on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook showing how they have succeeded with the help of Florida Virtual School. In the photo caption, students were asked to explain how FLVS has allowed them to do great things using the hashtag #SuccessAtFLVS.

Three winners were chosen – one at random, one by popular vote, and one selected by FLVS judges. We received images from hospitalized and homebound students, students entering the ROTC, community service volunteers, musicians, artists, athletes, and aspiring entrepreneurs – all of which made us wish we could have chosen more of you!

Social Media Use Could Come With A Price!

By on May 15th, 2015

teens-social-mediaFacebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Vine, Instagram, and Pinterest are all ways teens stay connected.

Social media allows us to connect with those near and far and opens doors to a variety of opportunities. According to the Pew Research Internet Project, 73 percent of Americans use social networking sites as of September 2013. Pew Research also shows that 95 percent of all teens ages 12-17 are now online.

While connecting and expressing one’s self on a global scale may be something we’re all entitled to, exercise caution. Posting inappropriate, vulgar, or disrespectful content comes with a price. Not only can you lose your admission to college and/or your scholarship, but you could also lose your job. Continue reading
