#FVHSClassof2023: From Barrel Racing to Pre-Law with Lacie B.

Florida Virtual High School (FVHS) Senior Lacie B.’s love for animals started early in life because she grew up on a farm in the rural community of Indian River County. Feeding and taking care of her horses and cows took up a lot of time after school, so when Lacie’s mom took a remote job working from home before her freshman year of high school, she decided to research schools that would give the flexibility to learn at home on her own time and pace. As soon as Lacie saw the diverse list of courses and the diploma awarded upon completion of high school requirements, she jumped at the opportunity and never looked back.

Awarding Excellence: Club Awards Day 2023

The annual Club Awards Day is a highlight of the Florida Virtual School (FLVS) school year because it recognizes the hard work, dedication, and achievements of more than 350 student leaders nominated by their FLVS club sponsors. The event demonstrates how camaraderie, friendships, and continued learning evolve outside the virtual classroom. With more than 60 student clubs and activities, FLVS offers students the opportunity to expand their knowledge and spend time with friends and classmates who share the same interests.

5 Tips to Help Students Prepare for a Successful DBA

Discussion-based assessments (DBAs) are something that many students may feel anxious about, including myself. Whether you feel unprepared or don’t understand the module, there are several reasons students may dread DBAs. As a 14-year-old in 11th grade, I find myself spending endless hours writing arguments, notes, watching help videos, and attending tutor sessions for a DBA, which is really a conversation that takes less than 10 minutes (LOL)! In this blog, I will go over five tips to help my fellow students prepare for a successful DBA. These tips will help with studying, taking notes, overcoming anxiety, and more!

The Power of School Choice: Supporting Kendall After a Spinal Cord Stroke

In April 2020, when Florida Virtual School (FLVS) student Kendall T. was only 12 years old, she felt a sharp pain in her back. As the pain increased, she asked her mom, Misty, to look at her back. What she found was a huge bruise, which was odd because Kendall hadn’t done any activities that day that would have caused it. Then, a few minutes later, her feet started to tingle. At that point, Misty decided it was time to go to the emergency room, and by the time they got there 20 minutes later, Kendall couldn’t stand.

How to Reset and Recharge for the Spring Semester

The 2022-2023 school year has been eventful, filled with ups and downs. Many students and families are feeling overwhelmed, tired, and counting the days until winter break.  The two-week break is the ideal time to practice relaxation, reflection, and rejuvenation.   

While winter break is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the holidays, spend time with friends and family and soak in the joys of the season, it is also an opportune time to practice self-care and prepare your mind for the upcoming semester.
