Meet Jack, FLVS Student Cyclist
By Florida Virtual School on August 31st, 2020
Jack Mizzoni is a student cyclist from Ocala who takes courses with FLVS Flex. When he is not working on his FLVS coursework, you can usually find him training on his mountain bike!
Now entering 10th grade, Jack has been taking online courses with FLVS since middle school. This past summer, he enrolled in Personal Financial Literacy. Jack loves to “flex” his time and often works on his schoolwork while traveling across the southeast racing his bike. He’s even been known to complete discussion-based assessment (DBA) with his teacher while on two wheels!

Did you know that 97 percent of people who start to write a book never finish it? Out of every 1,000 people who set out to do so, less than 30 will complete the task. Well, we’d like to introduce you to someone who not only wrote a book—he had it published while in 8th grade.

By Guest Blogger on July 30th, 2020
Every year, students explore their hobbies and interests through Florida Virtual School (FLVS) courses, clubs, and activities. This year, FLVS Flex student artist Nimue took 5th grade Art to develop her techniques and learn about various art forms and styles, but this was not the start of her journey. Nimue began painting when she was just 4 years old! In fact, many of her family members are artists as well.
When Nimue was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS), a connective tissue disorder, her family introduced her to painting to help improve her focus and mental health.

This post was written by Emari Craft, a Class of 2020 graduate who took online courses with FLVS Flex.
My name is Emari Craft. I was a Florida Virtual School (FLVS) student from 7th grade until 11th grade. Online school was the best option for me. I wanted flexibility without compromising my education. When I became a Florida Virtual School student, I was worried that I would not receive the same education as my peers. I did not receive the same education. I believe my education was even better than what I would have received in a traditional school. I was always prepared for End-of-Course exams. I did well on the ACT because of the rigorous courses I took when I was an FLVS student.

To my fellow graduates of the Class of 2020, don’t let the midst of this pandemic dull your fires or sadden your passionate hearts and wise, academic minds. Our accomplishments and experiences over the past four years of our lives surpass in-person contact and any computer screen standing in our way, as we all particularly know very well.

As I reflect on the 2019-20 school year, I am reminded of how resilient and steadfast we are. This year’s graduating seniors were born into this world post 9/11, during a time of great uncertainty, and when online education was “just a thing of the future.”
Now they are online graduates during our lifetime’s first major pandemic. It may seem unimaginable, but here we are, persevering!

Hailey Scheinman is dedicated to making a difference in her community and around the world because of her twin sister, Livy. Livy was born with epilepsy, causing seizures that required multiple brain surgeries, many medications, and physical therapy from a young age.
At just 6 years old, Hailey was inspired to help her family raise money for the cost of physical therapy by selling homemade paintings and bracelets. Her small project magnified when her family and friends started hosting yearly lemonade stands called “Lemonade for Livy.” Their lemonade stand became a huge success, expanding into a national event that has raised more than $700,000 for the Epilepsy Foundation!

Blended and online learning are still relatively new modes of Kindergarten-12th grade learning. As they continue to grow, learning more about what makes them effective for students is critically important.
Research and Evaluation is an arm of our Analysis, Assessment, and Accountability department at Florida Virtual School. Part of this team’s work includes collaborating with universities and other research partners to broaden and contribute to blended and online learning research focused on primary and secondary educational environments.

By Florida Virtual School on April 23rd, 2020
The Florida legislature recognizes the need to prepare students for a rapidly-changing future. In 2011, a requirement was introduced that every Florida student successfully complete one online course in high school. However, the benefits of online learning extend far beyond a transcript!
Our students agree—our online courses are more than just a credit!
