By Florida Virtual School on February 12th, 2021

While the true origin of Valentine’s Day is not clear, we do know that sometime during the Middle Ages, the day became widely recognized as a celebration of love. In fact, the oldest known Valentine still in existence is a poem penned in 1415 by a French duke. Now, more than 600 years later, we continue to share warm fuzzies and heart-filled emojis every February.
This year may look different as we find creative ways to share the love, but we are thrilled to pass along heartfelt sentiments from our FLVS families and staff who recreate those feelings of warmth online!

By Rose Rodriguez on January 29th, 2020
My high school daughter asked me the other day if we could celebrate the 100th day of school. She complained that after 5th grade she no longer gets to celebrate that day at school. She recalled some great memories – like when they used to count to 100 with M&Ms or make a 100-link paper chain.
But who says only elementary students get to celebrate the 100th day of school? This is actually a great opportunity for teachers and homeschool parents to incorporate fun ideas across all grades and curriculum. Continue reading
Virtual School, Real Success
By April Fleetwood on September 9th, 2019
In a definition search of the word “virtual,” multiple synonyms and meanings appear. Words such as “almost” and “nearly” are the first, which make clear why some may have misconceptions of being a full-time student of virtual school. While most people know that virtual school most directly means school that happens online, how many understand the day-to-day realities of virtual students?
Friendships Formed through FLVS Full Time

This post was written by 2018-19 FLVS Full Time Senior Class President, Carson Brown.
In February of this year, I had the privilege of meeting a friend in person on our schoolwide field trip to SeaWorld. The first interaction I had with my peer was online while participating in 2018 Shark Week – a virtual event hosted by our student council that consisted of five days devoted to networking for FLVS students. I watched the live chat as students showcased their Halloween costumes on “Wacky Wear Wednesday.” One particular comment that caught my eye was an unassuming, clear statement. I’ll never forget the words he wrote.
“This is so cool!” the comment began. “I have found my people.” Continue reading

By Anne Flenner on July 30th, 2018
In July and August, stores are full of students and parents scouring the shelves for the best deal on school supplies. When a student signs up for FLVS, they often wonder, “What school supplies do I need?” While you may not need a glue stick or mirror for your locker when you take FLVS courses, there are a few items that you will want to have for a successful year. FLVS Joins St. Jude’s Walk for Children
By Guest Blogger on September 8th, 2016
At FLVS, our teachers and support staff make up the heart and soul of our organization. All of our efforts are centered on the lives of the individual students we serve.
This month, one of our staff members and his daughter (a student at FLVS) are especially representative of this mission as we join the statewide 5k Walk for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Mike Smith, FLVS Peer Counseling and Critical Thinking Skills teacher, says that his family has been a proud supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for more than 25 years. His cousin (who happens to be getting married the same day as the walk this year) was treated and cured there in the early 1990s. Now, Mike’s family is once again part of the St. Jude mission to cure all children stricken with cancer. Continue reading
