It’s March, and minus the cold snap madness, spring has sprung—and FLVS continues to sow seeds of learning!
While you may be rooted in the “here and now” of schoolwork and tasks to accomplish this semester, we understand that some of you may already be thinking of life after high school. For many, that may mean college. Or, maybe you think you’d like to go to college but aren’t sure if you “have what it takes” or if you can afford it.
Great news! If you are a student in Florida, you can learn how to prepare for college without leaving your home. (But we do recognize that leaving the home is ultimately the goal of every child—and their parents.)
Virtual College Week
You can explore the notion of college all from your living room if you make plans now to participate in Virtual College Week, April 4-6. Presented by FloridaShines, students and parents can get free expert advice on all things college-related, including the admissions process and financial aid. Gather important information, ask questions, hear from others—demystify college at no cost. Continue reading
It’s February and we think you’re simply going to LOVE all that FLVS has to offer!
First, we want to remind you that Presidents’ Day is just around the corner. Please note that Monday, Feb. 20 and is a designated holiday break for all FLVS instructors and support staff.
After the long weekend, there are all kinds of opportunities that extend beyond the classroom or courses you select. Here are a few that FLVS is proud to sponsor:
Digital Learning Day
Celebrate Digital Learning Day (DLD) with FLVS next Thursday, Feb. 23. Digital learning can involve any instructional practice that uses technology to strengthen a student’s learning experience. With digital advances ranging from educational apps to new online courses and programs, DLD is a day to keep up with the latest in online education. Be sure to check out our social media pages on this special day next week as we feature a DLD Elementary Takeover on the FLVS Instagram page. Viewers will be able to see “a day in the life” of our very own FLVS elementary students. Connect with us @floridavirtualschool to make sure you don’t miss it!
Dashing through December…in an FLVS kind of way…completing all assignments…improving all the way…ho, ho, ho!
Can you feel it? That sudden surge of excitement that loudly exclaims we are at the mid-year mark and ready to scratch off another year under our belts. Students, let me let you in on a secret…you’re not the only one excited about a break…shhh.
Whether you are a student or teacher sitting in a brick-and-mortar classroom or you plug in daily for online education, the rush from Thanksgiving to New Years can make it hard to focus. But buckle up—we are almost there!
December certainly has been bustling with activities and many of our students enjoyed immersing themselves deeper in technology during Computer Science Week with an Hour of Code (FLVS style, of course). Others recently journeyed to faraway lands, all from the comforts of home during the FLVS 2016 World Fest. No passports were needed, just the willingness to tune in and celebrate different cultures and hear travels and tales from some of our amazing teachers. Continue reading
Over the last several weeks, FLVS students have been sharing what makes them unique in our fall photo contest on social media.
Using Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook, participants were asked to submit a photo showing what makes them one-of-a-kind using #IAMFLVS.
It was truly inspiring to see so many entries (including many of our new elementary students!) and hear all of your stories. We also enjoyed following the journey of several students who participated in our contest in years past!
We loved hearing how the flexibility of FLVS allows you to be yourself and follow your dreams.
As we have in previous contests, three winners were selected…one at random, one by our judges, and one by popular vote.
And now, we’re excited to present them to you!
In a galaxy far, far away…all of Padawans turned in their research projects on time and received perfect scores every time…and…uh…wait a minute – this does sound like a fictional world!
Let’s land in the real world where a research project requires time and effort and especially some serious research skills. Cue the dramatic music and let’s begin your training! Continue reading
The FLVS Social Media course won’t teach you how to use Facebook, the proper way to use a hashtag, or how to get more Instagram followers.
What it will teach is how social media has evolved, how your digital footprint makes an impact, and how you can find authenticity and truth in an online world where you can “be” anyone.
You might have heard people say that the world doesn’t revolve around you. But in the world of social media, that’s not really true. Continue reading
This article was written and published by a Florida Virtual School student for the FLVS student newspaper, News in a Click.
With all of the social media available to the world today, people tend to forget about the bigger things in life.
Facebook, Tumblr, Pinterest, Reddit, Instagram, Snapchat and many other social media sites all play an important part in our everyday lives. Sometimes, it is easy to forget that there is more to life than documenting everything and getting likes on pictures and posts.
It is indeed fun to spend time on social media and everybody deserves time to look at these sites, but, with the amount of time we spend on social media, it would seem that we are missing out on life. Continue reading
Over the last two months, students have been sharing images on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook showing how they have succeeded with the help of Florida Virtual School. In the photo caption, students were asked to explain how FLVS has allowed them to do great things using the hashtag #SuccessAtFLVS.
Three winners were chosen – one at random, one by popular vote, and one selected by FLVS judges. We received images from hospitalized and homebound students, students entering the ROTC, community service volunteers, musicians, artists, athletes, and aspiring entrepreneurs – all of which made us wish we could have chosen more of you!
Do you know how to penny board?
After a summer of practice, our winner of the FLVS Brain Challenge does!
Florida Virtual School student Vinay K. spent the last several weeks making progress on his penny boarding skills and compiled all of the clips of his successes and failures in one final video. As our contest winner, Vinay was the lucky recipient of four admission tickets to Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, FL.
Check out Vinay’s winning video entry in our summer contest below! Continue reading
Today we’re recognizing @horses5ful1 of Instagram for her piano practice of “Let it Go” from Disney’s Frozen.
There’s only one week left to show what you’ve learned this summer for the #FLVSbrainchallenge!
All you need to do is share a video of you learning something new on Vine, Instagram, or YouTube (or all three!) and you could win four tickets to Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
